Nowadays, most of the so-called powerful men in the world are being turned around by a file, eating their brains. The Jeffrey Epstein scandal is shaking the news world! The Epstein file, which is spread over millions of pages, has dragged current and former US presidents, wealthy personalities, and influential figures of the world into the spotlight.

The Jeffrey Epstein case was an example of how a sexual abuse scandal involving the world's most powerful, wealthy, and politically connected people can be suppressed for decades. But it was investigative journalist Julie K. Brown who brought this case back to the center of public debate, raised the voices of the victims to the national level, and questioned the ethics of the American justice system.

This story is not just an expose of a criminal. This incident is also a vivid example of a deep study of how justice can become an object of bargaining, and how journalism can challenge it.

The news of the Epstein file disclosure was published in the Miami Herald, in which investigative journalist Julie K. Brown ran a column titled ‘Perversion of Justice’. The phrase ‘perversion of justice’ basically means to pervert the course of justice or to distort the course of justice. In the legal sense, ‘to pervert the course of justice’ refers to the act of deliberately turning the justice system in the wrong direction. This includes acts such as destroying evidence, giving false statements, or shielding a criminal. That is, doing illegal things to avoid punishment or to convict an innocent person.

The reason Julie K. Brown ran a column titled ‘Perversion of Justice’ was that the justice system was perverted by the 2008 ‘non-prosecution deal’ Epstein received. In this, the agreement between the prosecution and the accused protects the accused from serious charges. Powerful people had twisted the legal process in their favor and suppressed the voices of victims.

In the Epstein case, this meant that in 2008, Jeffrey Epstein was under investigation by the FBI and local authorities for his alleged involvement in the sexual exploitation of underage girls in the Palm Beach area of Florida since the early 2000s. He could have been charged with federal sex-trafficking, which could have put him in prison for life. Despite the police investigation, the victims’ statements, and the evidence, Epstein received an unprecedentedly lenient ‘plea deal’ in 2008.

That is, Epstein’s legal team reached a secret agreement with the US Department of Justice (Southern District of Florida). The agreement protected Epstein from federal prosecution and forced him to accept only a minor charge at the state level (solicitation of prostitution). As a result, he only had to serve 13 months in prison, and that too with ‘work release’, which allowed him to work outside during the day. That is, he could do whatever he wanted during the day. The controversial aspect of this was that the agreement not only protected Epstein, but also some of his associates from federal prosecution.

The women who were victims were not informed of the agreement, which violated their rights. The girls, who were imprisoned by sexual predators at the age of 13 or 14 and who now understand how they were victims, were not even told that the justice system had gone against them. For this reason, the agreement was criticized as the “sweetheart deal”—an example of the justice system giving special privileges to the rich and powerful.

Julie K. Brown has been exposing the incidents, calling it a “perversion of justice” because the voices of the victims were suppressed while the perpetrators were spared serious punishment. While secretly meeting with the women who were victims, she also built a network to protect them. Julie began this reporting in 2018 after seeing that the “non-prosecution deal” Epstein received in 2008 had weakened the justice system. She has been uncovering the stories of the victims and seeking justice again.

The number of women who have come forward in the Epstein case has now reached close to 100. In 2026, the US Department of Justice released files containing the names and details of the victims in nearly 3 million documents, which have since been ordered to be removed. Some women in the case have voluntarily made their names and stories public (for example, Virginia Giuffre, Sarah Ransom, Courtney Wilde, etc. have made videos of themselves as children, when they arrived at Epstein's island, and as they are now). Brown treated them not as news sources, but as human victims. She gave them time, listened, and presented their stories in their own words.

The circumstances at the time and the 'Me Too' campaign that started in 2017 also helped Julie to open up to the victims. In other words, when the Epstein case became public, the 'Me Too' movement was already underway in society. It had already created an environment for talking about sexual violence and exploitation. This environment inspired the victims to speak out, and in the Epstein case, some women also came forward, which made it easier for Julie to report.

The phrase 'Me Too' was first used by Tarana Burke in 2006. She wrote about sexual abuse in 'My Space' This is to encourage survivors of violence to share empathy and support with each other.
