Publication of the final shortlist of candidates towards the proportional electoral system

The Election Commission has made public the final closed list for the upcoming House of Representatives elections under the proportional representation system. A meeting held at the central office of the Commission on Sunday finalized the names of 3,135 candidates proposed under 57 election symbols by 63 political parties.

According to the Commission's Assistant Spokesperson Kul Bahadur GC, the number of women in the public list is higher than that of men. Of these, 1,772 are women and 1,363 are men. The Commission had strictly examined the provision that the closed list submitted by the parties should include clusters of Khas Arya, Adivasi Janajati, Tharu, Dalit, Madhesi and Muslim communities as per the constitutional provisions.
This final list has been made public by removing the names of candidates with duplicate names, claims and objections and insufficient documents in the initial list submitted by the parties. The Commission has put the detailed details of the closed list and the personal details of the candidates on its website.

Under the mixed electoral system, there is a constitutional provision that 110 of the 275 members of the House of Representatives will be elected through the proportional representation system. In this system, voters vote for political parties rather than candidates. Seats are allocated based on the total number of votes received by the parties.
