Baghbhairav Jatra is going on in Kirtipur today
Kathmandu, August 1. The Baghbhairav Jatra is being held today at the famous Baghbhairav Temple in Kirtipur, an ancient settlement in the Kathmandu Valley. There is a cultural tradition of celebrating the Baghbhairav Jatra on the 1st of every Bhada month in Kirtipur.
It is understood from the establishment of this temple that human settlement in Kirtipur has been there since ancient times and that the settlement was later protected by Baghbhairav. There are artifacts older than the Lichchhavi period in the temple premises.
Daily worship is held at this Baghbhairav Temple, which has a close relationship with the daily life of the people of Kirtipur. Similarly, there is a tradition of performing special worship at night called “Chapuja”. Such worship is performed by a particular family on a day in the year according to their wishes. This Chapuja, which is performed along with Tantric meditation, is performed by a Bajrayani Buddhist priest.
On normal days, only the main entrance is open, but on the day of the Bagh Bhairav Jatra, two gates are opened and in the evening, a statue of Bagh Bhairav is placed on a khat and taken around the city. Apart from the large statue of Bagh Bhairav in the temple, there are also two small statues, one of which is taken around the city.
